As the head of the New Zealand Aid Programme, Amanda Ellis is responsible for the team that manages over half a billion dollars of official development expenditure annually and advises the government on international development issues. As the head of the New Zealand Aid Programme, Amanda Ellis is responsible for the team that manages over half a billion dollars of official development expenditure annually and advises the government on international development issues. Ms. Ellis was previously the Lead Specialist, Poverty Reduction and Economic Management for the World Bank Group. She also managed the World Bank's Global Private Sector Leaders CEO Forum promoting women's economic development.
She founded the Gender Entrepreneur Markets (GEM) programme at the International Finance Corporation, providing advice to developing country governments on private sector development and practical initiatives to assist women entrepreneurs with business and management training. GEM developed the first ever SME (small to medium enterprise) credit lines for women in Africa, drawing on Ms Ellis' experience as National Manager, Women in Business and Head of Women's Markets for Westpac Banking Group.
As an economist specialising in international trade and development economics, Ms Ellis previously worked for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including roles at the OECD in Paris, Consul in the French Pacific Territories and manager of New Zealand aid programmes in Viet Nam, Lao PDR and Cambodia.
Ms. Ellis is the author of two best selling Random House titles, "Women's Business, Women's Wealth: Create the Life You Want at Work and in Business" (2002), and "Woman 2 Woman: New Zealand women share their experiences of career and business" (2004), and lead author of five World Bank titles in the Directions in Development Series on gender and growth in Africa, East Asia and the Pacific.
