Dame Rosie Horton honoured

Honours and Accolades for the bay Resident!

With the Queen's Birthday honours list comes the news that our area is home to a new dame and a new knight. Today we profile the 11 east and bays recipients and recognise their contributions to our district and to the country.

Dame Rosie Horton

The accolades don't stop for tireless fundraiser Dame Rosie Horton, QSO, QSM.

Dame Rosie has been appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to philanthropy.

The Remuera resident has dedicated more than 40 years to working with the sick, disabled, children and the environment.

Dame Rosie is now vice-chairwoman of the Starship Foundation board of trustees and in 2008 she told the East & Bays Courier the hospital is "the love of my life".

Her other honours include a Mayors Living Legend Award, the Catherine Variety Sheridan Award from Variety – The Childrens Charity, and a Distinguished Citizen of Auckland award.

Instrumental in raising funds for life-saving equipment at Starship, including New Zealand's first paediatric bone marrow transplant unit, Dame Rosie developed her skills for raising necessary funds during her time spent on the board of the Laura Ferguson Trust for Disabled Persons.

She has also been involved in the Salvation Army Bethany Centre, Womens Refuge, The Breast Cancer Foundation and Home and Family.

Other honours include Sir John Graham, John Banks, Dr Margaret Horsburgh and Daniel Vittori.
