Join internationally renowned tech and business leader, Dr Anita Sands, and leadership psychologist and ex-NZSAS Officer, Dr Alia Bojilova, as they deep dive into their take on resilience with moderator and Global Women board member, Penelope Barr-Sellers. Anita and Alia will discuss techniques to help you thrive in leadership and life in ambiguous times and why resilience is at the heart of it.

Dr Anita Sands is a U.S. based board-director, author, and speaker. A former Fulbright Scholar, she holds a Masters in Public Policy and Management as well as a Ph.D. in Atomic and Molecular Physics.

Anita spent a decade in leadership positions in financial services in Canada and the U.S. specializing in innovation and enterprise transformation. She then pivoted into a portfolio career and serves on the boards of directors of three public companies – ServiceNow, iStar and Pure Storage – and private companies, ThoughtWorks and NuBank. She is also an active investor in, and advisor to, numerous technology start-ups. 

This year, Anita is the incoming James Wei Visiting Professor in Entrepreneurship at Princeton University where she’ll be teaching courses on effective communication and female entrepreneurship. Anita is a regular contributor to on the topic of leadership and strategy. She’s also a renowned international speaker, known for engaging audiences with her witty, thoughtful, and practical insights on the implications of trends such as digital disruption, the power of belonging, and leadership and strategy in times of ambiguity and change.

Dr Alia Bojilova is a Registered Psychologist, with deep expertise in organizational, team and individual resilience and leadership. As an advisor and coach, Alia has worked with leaders and teams the world over in some of the most challenging environments. Spanning multiple domains and geographies, Alia’s work has included organizations in the commercial, not-for-profit and government sectors, as well as start-up companies, and peak performance sports. More recently, Alia’s focus and contribution has been on global trailblazing CEOs and companies, including in Silicon Valley. Through the diversity and depth of her experience, she makes invaluable and impactful contributions to her clients’ capacity to thrive in ambiguity.

Alia’s rigour and breadth of experience is informed by her career as a Military Officer. She served with the New Zealand Special Air Services (1NZSAS) and the Counter Terrorist Tactics Group. She headed NZDF Organizational Development and the development and implementation of the Defence Leadership Framework. Her military operational experience took her to Afghanistan, Syria, Israel, the wider Middle East, and East Timor. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the United Nations Commendation for successfully leading through acute and critical incidents in Syria between 2013 and 2014. Further to her registration, Alia holds a BA, MSc and a PhD in the field of resilience.

GLOBAL WOMEN MEMBER | Penelope Barr-Sellers is a strategic brand, engagement and communications consultant.

Her most recent full-time post was Assistant Vice-Chancellor External Relations and Development at Massey University and part of the senior leadership team. Penelope held similar roles at AUT from her return to New Zealand from London in 2010. Her decade in the UK included senior management roles in Omnicom agencies working on some of the world’s top brands. In the late nineties she founded DDB’s first PR agency and was one of two women on their leadership team. Her first career was in broadcasting, working as a broadcast meteorologist, presenter and journalist on One News as well as shows such as Made in New Zealand (business) and Body and Soul (health and well-being).

Penelope is an adaptable leader and communicator with broad sector and market expertise. She is passionate about working with organisations to create distinct brand identities and building reputations that will help them to thrive in a digitally disrupted, VUCA world.
